In about a month and a half, TV actors across America will don their best red carpet gear and get together for a night at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards. One star, however, will be notably absent. That would be Meghan Markle, who has reportedly "politely turned down" an invitation to attend and present at the Emmys, according to The Sun. An unnamed, L.A.-based source told The Sun that the Duchess of Sussex made this decision to draw a "line in the sand" between her acting career and her new life as a royal.

“We had hoped Meghan would attend as a way of saying goodbye to her Suits fans and colleagues," a source told The Sun. “Show executives and NBC had offered Harry and her an invitation to celebrate with the biggest stars around, meet her showbiz friends and even present an honour. But Meghan is not attending.”

The Sun reported that NBC and Kensington Palace both declined to comment.

For six years, Markle played the character of Rachel Zane on Suits, but she left the show (and her acting life) behind when she got engaged to Prince Harry. Back in April, Suits gave her a fitting send-off when they had Rachel get married in the Season 7 finale just a few weeks before the royal wedding took place in real life.

“I knew from a year ago that this relationship was burgeoning,” Suits creator Aaron Korsh previously said about Markle leaving the show, in an interview with Today on Radio 4. “And I had a decision to make because I didn't want to intrude and ask her, 'Hey, what's going on and what are you going to do?' So collectively with the writers, we decided to take a gamble that these two people were in love and it was going to work out.”

“What we decided to do (was to) say, 'Look, I would rather have good things happen to Meghan in her life,' which would likely mean her leaving the show,” he continued. “So let's plan on that and it's much easier to undo that, if it came to it, than to just plan on her staying forever and then finding out she's going to go.”
